Louis: So then we all went back in, sat around the fire for a little bit and then decided to go to sleep. But in fact, quite embarrassingly, even though we were 99% sure it was a cow we didn’t really dare sleep in our own beds. We actually had to sleep on mattresses on the floor next to each other because we had no key for the door and we thought the cow/man [would come in and murder us]. (x)
High school teachers: I’m not going to share my political beliefs because it could get me fired and replaced by a turnip who won’t even try to teach you to think for yourself, and I know that if I give you enough tools and information you can figure this out for yourself. I believe in you. *inside head* Also, fuck Trump.
College professors: I come from a tradition of dissent with meaningful tenure protections and my colleagues will have my back if the administration tries anything. Also, the Board is mostly isolated from hiring and tenure decisions. *out loud* Fuck Trump.
High school teachers: addressing a captive audience of minors actually, literally required by the state to attend school, who cannot leave class without disciplinary action which could at worst deprive them of their right to an education or result in them being subjected to abuse at home, who have very little recourse if given an unfair grade due to political or ideological differences, and who may have only this teacher available for a required-to-graduate subject
College professors: addressing an audience of adults over whom they have very little direct authority, who chose to attend the college, chose to attend the class, quite frequently have their pick of professors for a required course, can generally pack up and leave in the middle of a class with little repercussion so long as they aren’t disruptive about it, and usually have written instructions for how to handle disputes with professors or a specific person whose job it is to handle those disputes
I mean, the absurd degree to which a high school teacher can get fucked over for talking about their personal views or commenting on current events in class is beyond jacked, and this is why it’s super important to pay attention to what the local school board is up to. But there are also some very good reasons they might want to avoid discussing personal topics that aren’t relevant to the curriculum, and the lack of meaningful freedom on their students’ part to dissent or remove themselves from a discussion they find deeply offensive or disturbing is a pretty big one.
